AP English Literature Analytic Rubric Mechanics
The AP English Literature exam evaluates reading comprehension across 55 multiple-choice questions (45% weighting) and 3 analytical essays (55% weighting: Question 1 Poetry Analysis, Question 2 Prose Fiction Analysis, Question 3 Literary Argument). Each essay is graded from 0 to 6. Students achieving 74 or higher out of 100 composite points earn an AP score 5.

How to Maximize Composite Points on Section 2 Free-Response
Because free-response questions are scored by human AP Readers using strict standardized rubrics, students can reliably predict their scores by targeting high-percentage points: securing the thesis point in the introduction, citing explicit textual or empirical evidence, and fully elaborating on the causal link or sophistication point.
