AP Chemistry Scoring Rigor and Cutoff Curves

AP Chemistry is widely recognized as having one of the most rigorous scoring curves. Section 1 consists of 60 discrete and sets-based MCQs (50% weight). Section 2 contains 3 long free-response questions (10 points each) and 4 short free-response questions (4 points each), for a raw FRQ total of 46 points scaled to 50% weight. Achieving roughly 72% composite points is typically sufficient to earn a top score of 5.

Official Advanced Placement 1-5 Score Scale Definitions

Every Advanced Placement examination results in a final score between 1 and 5. The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends that colleges award credit for AP exam scores of 3 or higher:

AP Score College Board Rating Equivalent College Course Grade College Credit Granting Policy
5 Extremely Well Qualified A+ / A Guaranteed full college course credit or accelerated honors placement at top universities.
4 Well Qualified A- / B+ / B Eligible for course credits and prerequisite fulfillment at over 92% of institutions.
3 Qualified (Passing) B- / C+ / C Accepted for elective or general education credit at most public university systems.
2 Possibly Qualified D No college credit awarded; demonstrates foundational subject exposure.
1 No Recommendation F No college credit awarded.

How to Maximize Composite Points on Section 2 Free-Response

Because free-response questions are scored by human AP Readers using strict standardized rubrics, students can reliably predict their scores by targeting high-percentage points: securing the thesis point in the introduction, citing explicit textual or empirical evidence, and fully elaborating on the causal link or sophistication point.
